Workshop Experience in Trabzon-Turkey

Our COST Action CA20102 MAF-WORLD recently held a training workshop on “Changes in the Marine Biota (MAF) of the Black Sea” in partnership with Karadeniz Technical University. The event took place in Trabzon on September 18, 2023, and lasted four days. Researchers from Georgia, Ukraine, and Türkiye attended the workshop and gained valuable insights into various Black Sea ecosystem aspects through expert lectures.

At the workshop, the participants got a chance to explore some important topics. They learned about using Geometric Morphometrics to study phenotypic variations in MAF organisms, like gastropods. This method was used to identify changes in shell morphology as a response to environmental degradation. Moreover, the attendees also got hands-on experience extracting statoliths from Rapana venosa specimens collected from the Black Sea. This practical knowledge helped them determine the age of these organisms.

The organisation sincerely thanks COST Action for their financial support and for scheduling this informative and collaborative workshop at Karadeniz Technical University.
